Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010 - Jeffery Broussard and Creole Cowboys
A hot, new band in southwest Louisiana's zydeco scene, the Creole Cowboys features Jeffery Broussard from the legendary band, Zydeco Force, along with long-time contributor to Cajun and Creole music, fiddle and guitar player, D'Jalma Garnier III. The band delivers great, pack-the-floor renditions of Creole classics as well as their own brand of contemporary zydeco. Early Creole music, as played by legends Canray Fontenot on fiddle and accordion player Delton Broussard, is experiencing a well-deserved resurgence of interest in Louisiana today. The Creole Cowboys are taking the next generation's perspective of this music and presenting it with contemporary flair and expertise. Jeffery Broussard is a leading member in Zydeco Force, an influential band at the forefront of the nouveau zydeco movement. His accordion and vocals defined this new style of Creole music, incorporating the soulful sounds of R&B into contemporary zydeco music and dance. The son of esteemed accordionist Delton Broussard, young Jeffery began his musical journey on the drums in his father's legendary band, the Lawtell Playboys, who were themselves innovators, adding some R&B and a funkiness to this traditional roots music. During this time, Jeffery was exposed to some of the great Creole fiddle players, including the king of the zydeco fiddle, Calvin Carrière. He has retained those precious melodies and songs he heard at home, at social gatherings and on the bandstand. And with the creation of the Creole Cowboys, and as Louisiana's newest Creole fiddle player, he captures the essence of this rich musical heritage.
Dance lesson at 5pm, music from 6-9:30 pm., $20.

- Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 - River City Slim and the Zydeco Hogs
Bandleader River City Slim is a lifelong Blues fan, musician and DJ. Slim was already a Texas/Louisiana Blues and R&B fiend when he was bitten by the Zydeco bug at a performance by Terence Simien. The Zydeco Hogs reflect Slim's deep background in Gulf Coast music -- he's played behind a slew of Louisiana and Texas luminaries, including Willis Prudhomme, Corey Ledet, Jeffrey Broussard, Dexter Ardoin, D.L. Menard and others. The newest Hog, bassist and vocalist Andy Karlok has held down the bottom for some of the best Blues and R&B bands in the Northeast, including a two-year stint with Blues legend Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson. During this time, Andy appeared on Luther's M.C. Records release "Live At The Rynborn". His most recent gig before joining The Hogs was an extended run with Dr. Ya Ya's Gumbo Party, a New England band that specializes in New Orleans-style R&B and funk. Mark Thompson handles the squeeze box chores. He has jammed with the best at folk and roots music festivals throughout New England, being spotted onstage with such Louisiana luminaries as the Basin Brothers and D.L. Menard. Guitar sensation Toad Eckert provides the melodic counterpoint to the accordion while jacking the energy level up a notch or two. Equally adept at churning rhythms and soaring leads, Toad also contributes his distinctive vocals to several songs. Rockin' Robin Bean's rubboard syncopations and occasional flights of furious fiddling rounds out the rhythm section. Robin's let-the-good-times-roll stage presence brings things to another level, and he adds great harmony vocals to many tunes.
River City Slim & The Zydeco Hogs first came together in the cold New England winter of '98 - '99. The Hogs made a big splash at the eighth annual Folk Next Door concert at the University of Hartford in May of '99, and haven't looked back since. The band has made appearances at music festivals up and down the East Coast, including a performance at the 9th Annual Cajun/Zydeco Crawfish Festival in Fort Lauderdale, FL in 2001. Other major festivals The Hogs have been featured at include Musikfest in Bethehem PA, the Great Blue Heron Fest in Sherman NY, and Rhythm & Roots in Charlestown RI. The leanest, meanest Zydeco machine in the Northeast is now poised for the next step -- coming to your town to rock the party!
Dance lesson at 7pm, music from 8-11:30 pm, $20.

- Saturday, Mar. 13, 2010 - Johnny Ace and Sidewalk Zydeco
Johnny Ace and Sidewalk Zydeco have been playing together since September 2006. Fate dictated that they log onto Craigslist at the same time looking for like minded musicians who loved Zydeco and wanted to put a band together. They met at a midtown studio and found an instant groove. From that first jam they have strived to bring the real Zydeco music of Southwest Louisiana and East Texas to the Northeast and beyond and expose it to as many people as possible. The band can't help being influenced by the collective musical experience of the members which ranges from Do-wop, to Salsa, Bluegrass, Ska, Reggea and just plain kickin' Rock and Roll. Those influences give the band a distinctive contemporary urban sound but still firmly grounded within the single and triple row accordion sounds of Zydeco. Like Johnny says during their shows, "we put a New York edge to that Creole sound and when we hit the stage we don't fool around." Indeed, their audiences are treated to a "ferocious dance groove" that is appreciated by dancers who are always looking for that Zydeco beat that forces you to move. Even if they don't know the steps, everyone in the audience is on the floor moving something as soon as that diatonic accordion starts pullin', yea u right!

Sunday, Apr. 4, 2010 - Leroy Thomas and Zydeco Roadrunners
Leroy Thomas and Zydeco Roadrunners play traditional style Louisiana zydeco. Their high energy dance music is a favorite at home in Louisiana and on the road across the USA. Thomas started playing drums at eight. Not long after he started playing drums, he also began to learn the accordion, eventually mastering both the button accordion used by Zydeco musicians like John Delafose and Boozoo Chavis and the piano accordion, the instrument that Clifton Chenier played. At 19, he joined the band headed by his father (who today continues to play drums and sing at venues in Louisiana and Texas). In addition to playing music, Leroy Thomas did auto painting and body work and also worked on a rice and soybean farm. After moving to Houston, he became a pipe welder, but he continued as a musician. With the release of the his CD entitled Right Now is Primetime, Leroy Thomas has shown his strength as a songwriter as well as being able to compose catchy zydeco tunes. It is no surprise his material is being played by numerous other zydeco bands. Don't miss this chance to see the real thing - Louisiana Zydeco (and some Blues, too) in your own backyard.

Sunday, May 16, 2010 - T. Broussard & the Zydeco Steppers
Join us for one of the hottest new zydeco acts from Southwest Louisiana. While Bryant "T." Broussard is new to the scene, he hails from a long line of Creole and Zydeco musicians such as Bois Sec Ardoin and Carlton Frank. While cousin Keith Frank is has home and one the road, Bryant will undoubtably build a name for himself with his own brand of high-energy, powerful zydeco. Besides his mother, whom Bryant credits for his love of the music, many other relatives influenced him. His cousin Keith Frank, one of the hottest acts in Zydeco in Southwest Louisiana today, and Queen Ida, Grammy-winning Zydeco veteran of the West Coast are a few among many. Bryant's stage presence exudes a remarkable energy. He has been booked for performances from coast to coast. Some of his performances include both East and West Coast tours. A few of the festivals he has performed in include the Memphis, Tennessee Beal Street Festival, the Sparks, Nevada July 4th Festival, the Alabama Blues Festival, and the Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Festival. Other prominent local Louisiana events include Zydeco Extravaganza in Lafayette, Zydeco Throwdown in Opelousas, and numerous casino performances in Lake Charles and New Orleans. Some of his musical recordings can even be heard as the background music to promotional radio commercials and a Discovery Channel television program.
