Sunday, May 17, 2009 - Preston Frank and Jim Miller
Musical families are part of the herritage of Cajun and zydeco music. The Frank family is a prime example. While many on the east coast are more familar with son Keith and daughter Jennifer, father Preston is a talented Creole musician that we are very happy to host for his first appearance at our dance series. By the way, Preston's uncle Carlton is also a talented Creole fiddler. Preston Frank's 2003 CD, titled "Preston Frank and Family: Born in the Country", gives listeners a generous helping of a rare commodity these days: real Creole music, with deep roots in rural Soileau where Preston Frank was raised. His own song, the title track "Born in the Country," a tribute to the Creole life, sung in both French and English, has received a lot of airplay on Southwest Louisiana Zydeco shows. Other musicians will include Jim Miller and other previous members of Donna the Buffalo.

Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009 - Dennis Stroughmatt & Creole Stomp
Dennis Stroughmatt and Creole Stomp, a nationally touring Creole, Cajun, and Zydeco band is on the move to bring the best in Louisiana French music and entertainment to audiences of listeners and dancers across the country. Formed and led by French speaking Cajun/Creole Accordionist and Fiddler Dennis Stroughmatt, Creole Stomp is striving to not only entertain, but also to educate audiences about American French culture and music. Having lived in Louisiana and Quebec, Canada (and still touring in North America and Europe with many Louisiana based Cajun and Creole-Zydeco bands on occasion), Dennis only knows how to play it "downhome" and always has a sound that is fresh and "straight from the bayous and prairies" of southwest Louisiana. The Creole Stomp sound pulls from many influences but is noted for a style similar to the Ardoin Family Band and The Lawtell Playboys. Dennis and Creole Stomp have been seen and heard on radio and television with PBS-TV, WGN-TV, NPR's Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keilor, CNN's "World Beat" on Mardi Gras, and on many stages including the Illinois State Fair, The Louisiana Folklife Festival, the "On the Waterfront" festival in Rockford IL, the St. Louis Soulard Mardi Gras, The Cajun French Music Awards in Lafayette, LA, and The Mamou Cajun Festival in Mamou, LA. The new CD by Dennis Stroughmatt and Creole Stomp "Enfin...At Last" was nominated "Best Album" by a Cajun/Creole band based outside of Louisiana by the Cajun French Music Association for the 2003 awards festival in Lafayette, LA. Members of Creole Stomp include Jon Watson on drums, Robert Russell on lead guitar, Jim Willgoose on bass, and Jennifer Hellmuth (the resident French Acadian of Creole Stomp) on Rub-board and Triangle. The mixture of these fantastic and experienced musicians creates a talent gumbo that is almost unstoppable with an ability to play a wide range of Louisiana French music not often heard from strictly Cajun or Zydeco bands. Don't miss hearing a band that plays Creole to the core and often dives into "old school" Zydeco...the only one based north of Eunice LA.

Dance lesson at 7 pm, music from 8-11:30 pm, $20.

Venue:
Eagles Hall, 7 Old Albany Post Rd., Ossining, NY. This funky little dance space is a 100-year-old, former church that has been a setting in Hollywood productions. It features a wooded dance floor, air-conditioning, open bar, and plenty of safe, free parking. The location is moments from Ossining and Croton-Harmon train stations on the MetroNorth Hudson Line. Hint- there are direct trains from Grand Central Terminal to the Croton-Harmon station that is closer walk or cab.
Note: The Eagles Hall has other great events - see the schedule here.

Directions:
From Taconic State Pkwy., take Rt. 134 exit west for 3 miles to right at light on Rt. 9A North, then go approx. 1 mile and make the 3rd right at large Shady Farm Road Sign (also smaller sign for General Electric). After taking exit, take a quick left (right takes you into GE facility) and then turn left on Old Albany Post Rd (note that GPS and online maps may say to take a right - see note belwo). The club is 0.1 mile on right.

From Rt. 9 (between Ossining and Croton-on-Hudson), turn on Old Albany Post Rd. across from St. Augustine's Church and School. The turn is just south of Rt. 9 and 9A split. If you are heading North it's a right before the light; heading South, take a left at the light. After the turn, the hall is approx. 0.2 miles on left.

Important notes for Internet Maps and GPS users: Here is a screenshot of the correct map location of the club indicated by the Red Star. The maps services show an incorrect location indicated by the Black Dot (here is the original, incorrect map from MapQuest). Please be aware of this problem if you use GPS or internet mops

Also, you can take MetroNorth to the Croton-Harmon station on the Hudson Line. The hall is about half mile walk or a short cab ride from the station.
